Name: Renly Baratheon
Canon: A Song of Ice and Fire -- specifically, A Clash of Kings
Original or Alternate Universe: OU!
Canon Point: Just after his meeting with Stannis
Number:
Setting: http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Westeros Westeros. Specifically, vague middle-agey times.
History: Renly is the youngest son of Steffon and Cassana Baratheon, and ...somewhere in line to the throne of Westeros, at least when it’s Robert’s. He was born at Storm’s End, south of King’s Landing. Unfortunately, his parents died when he was still a baby, so he was mostly raised by his second-eldest brother, Stannis, and their maester. Robert, being the eldest and heir, was off being fostered in the North and fighting a war for the girl he loved and to get rid of the crazy Targaryens. That war has quite a lot to do with how Renly was raised, though he never knew much of it, being at least six at the time. Storm’s End was held under siege, however, and both Renly and Stannis faced eating animals and near-starvation until the siege was broken by a helpful smuggling pirate.
Anyway, eventually, Renly and Stannis grew up, Robert won the war and overthrew the Targaryens, and Renly was suddenly lord of Storm’s End. (Stannis never forgave him, because Storm’s End is his one true love.) While ruling Storm’s End -- since Stannis had Dragonstone, and Robert was off in King’s Landing being a king-- Renly met Loras Tyrell, who would become his best friend, squire, and eventual lover. It’s a long and complicated story involving Loras being forcibly fostered at Storm’s End, since his family was the one that had held it siege, a while back. Anyway, they met, they became friends, fell in love, yadda yadda yadda, and eventually Renly got summoned to King’s Landing to serve on Robert’s small council. He was master of laws, which basically involved following Robert around and making him sign things. ...And sometimes, parties. Lots of parties and hunting and jousts. (What, he’s a Baratheon. All good Baratheons like parties.)
So -- to the events of the first book. Renly met up with Robert and his procession as they were returning from their trip to Winterfell, stuck around to feast and have a good time, and also took a moment to laugh his ass off at his nephew that just got his butt kicked by an eight year old girl and her wolf. Eventually, he ended up in King’s Landing and fought in the tournament Robert held for Ned’s appointment as Hand of the King. He spent most of his time there, helping out Robert and plotting various ways to help get the Tyrells into some form of power -- even, once, asking Ned if he thought Margaery (Loras’ sister) held any resemblance to Lyanna Stark, whom Robert had been in love with. Renly goes hunting with Robert on the ill-fated trip that would lead to his death (under suspicious circumstances), and asked Ned to help him take control of the Baratheon children before Robert’s wife, Cersei, could take power by way of Joffrey. However, Ned refused, and Renly fled the city with Ser Loras Tyrell, presumably returning to Storm’s End or to Highgarden, the home of the Tyrells. Lots of other things happen after this, including the death of Ned Stark and the beginnings of a war, but we don’t see Renly again until the events of A Clash of Kings.
After Robert’s death, there is, understandably, an epic battle for the throne of Westeros. Primarily, it concerns the Lannisters, the remaining Baratheon brothers, and the Starks (sort of). Renly manages to get a great deal of support from the smaller houses -- due to his charm, good looks, and having extremely close ties with the Tyrell family, who have quite a lot of bannermen -- in addition to the bannermen of the Stormlands. In the midst of all this preparation for war, Renly also manages to find himself a wife, and ends up marrying Margaery Tyrell. (While, of course, carrying on a semi-secret affair with her elder brother.) While he might not have been the world’s best strategist, Renly knew well enough to let the other competitors for the throne wear each other down. So, while the Lannisters and Starks fought in the Riverlands, Renly spent a good amount of time meandering through the south, gathering supporters and hosting tournaments for the men under his command. This came to an end, however, when his elder brother Stannis laid siege to Storm’s End, forcing Renly to man up and respond. Catelyn Stark, there to parlay with Renly, convinced the brothers to at least attempt peace talks. They did -- but being the Baratheons, these talks did not go entirely well. They ended with Renly laughing at his brother, making light of the situation, and advising Stannis to give up and eat a peach. He was not planning to relinquish his claim to the throne, confident that he could defeat Stannis’ forces in battle and win the day. This is the point in canon I will be taking him from.
Personality: Renly is everything one would expect a possible heir to the throne to be. He is handsome, charming, friendly, and charismatic. The common people of Westeros love him much more than they do either of his elder brothers. Of course, that is easy to do, considering they are Robert and Stannis. Renly does put on a good show for the public, but it is mostly intentional. He fully embraces the role he has been put into -- the likable Baratheon. He enjoys being liked, and doesn’t actually need to work too hard to do so.
In actuality, he is not half as confident as he pretends to be. Renly knows he will never measure up to his eldest brother’s battle prowess. Robert is a war hero, Renly is squicked out by the sight of his own blood. He has a great respect for those who are higher in power than he is -- like his brother, the queen, and various Lannisters, but it is mostly a mask. He is a well-trained courtier in that respect, but he does not hide his feelings around those he trusts.
He prefers being the voice of sense in his family -- which is much needed, to be honest. If he has to be a bit of a snarky realistic arse to do so, then so be it. He does care about his brothers, it's just sometimes he feels like the only sane one among the lot of them. He is adamant in saying what he thinks to those he trusts, and sometimes even to the king when he feels Robert is being particularly ridiculous. All in all, he would probably have been the best hope for a king out of all the Baratheons, had circumstances turned out differently.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations: Looking really damn good in green, being the sassiest king in Westeros, a decent amount of skill at swordplay and jousting and the like.
Inventory: - dark green armor with an antlered helmet.
- one sword
- one scabbard
- a plain white shirt
- a set of black breeches
- a tunic, dark green with threads of gold running through it
- a crown set with golden antlers
- a pair of black boots
Appearance: He looks astoundingly similar to his eldest brother, Robert. --Or, more accurately, how Robert looked when he was younger and much thinner. Renly is tall, black of hair and blue of eye, with a stunningly handsome grin and an air of easy cheerfulness. In the show, his hair is short, but I generally envision it as shoulder-length at the very least. His PB is Gethin Anthony, from the TV version of Game of Thrones.
Age: 21-ish

Where was Loras. That was the first thought that had popped into his head after awakening, in the queer tube. Branded and head-spinning, in scarcely anything but his underclothes, and the Knight of Flowers comes to mind. In a less confusing moment, it would have caused much laughter, but not now. Renly was quite alone -- or so it seemed, without a man (or woman) to his name, stumbling about in search of some proper form of clothing. Eventually, he found his way to the lockers, fuzzily matching the numbers to the one on his arm, and -- there. Clothes. That was a welcome relief.
But now, what was he to do? This was clearly not Westeros. It was a strange, shining place, perhaps the stuff of fever dreams or nightmares that he could not quite name. To be taken up from Storm’s End, all alone, with all his clothes (and armour) from home, it was unsettling indeed. Perhaps it was some magic of Stannis’ standard-bearer? Renly had not trusted the look of her one bit, nor her words to him. “The night is dark and full of terrors indeed,” he muttered to himself, somewhat sourly, and tugged his tunic over his head. “The damned woman.”
Whatever the case, even if it had been magic -- Renly had to return home. After all, he had a war to win and a throne to claim, did he not?

[The video turns on first -- a closeup of a handsome young man’s face. A blue eye flashes in the screen for a moment, then the camera is turned over in his hands, buttons are pressed -- and it switches to voice. There is silence for a moment, save for the fumbling of Renly’s hands and some quiet breaths, and then -- a soft ‘Aah.’ The strange device is blinking at him, apparently he is meant to communicate. Sadly, his voice does not sound quite as authoritative as he wishes it to, mostly due to confusion.]
This is King Renly Baratheon, lord of the Seven Kingdoms. Speak, whoever listens, and tell me how I may return home. I have pressing business to attend to and a war to win.
[He falls silent once again, frowning, and pokes at the comm, some of the arrogance in his tone fading to honest curiosity and confusion.] If there is anyone listening, that is. This device is quite strange.
